... will feature one of these:
No, not the doofus. The scope! It's the Meade 16" Lightbridge. It has 4x the light gathering ability of my current scope. It should arrive before the next new moon! I'm pretty freakin' excited! _________________ My pants don't smell like sunshine anymore. |

AHHH!!! I haven't laughed like that in a LONG time!
Good one Katie! Well done!
Just one question...that looks like it will need at least a semi permanent home...not something you can drag out and set up...no? |

Actually, one of the big advantages to that type of scope design is ease of breakdown & setup. Or so they say... _________________ My pants don't smell like sunshine anymore. |

You'd think that with all that fancy technology, they could make it height-adjustable so that you didn't have to bend and twist to look in the viewfinder! That looks like a heck of a backache, come morning!

I think the doofus is looking through the spotter scope. The eyepiece is straight ahead in a comfortable position. Oh, and the things you'll be able to see through it! I can't wait! _________________ "To be early is to be on time, to be on time is to be late, to be late is to be left." - Mr. Bennett |

You make a perfectly good observation! (No pun intended...) You really can't change the dimensions of the scope (that would affect focal length) but you CAN adjust the height of your butt. Fortunately, I have one of these:
Just to give you an idea of how excited I am, the last time I had the chance to look through an instrument of that size was July of 2002 when Turtle and I spent a weekend at Cherry Springs. Here's an excerpt from that report:
| Quote: | This thing [The Veil Nebula] was HUGE! So big you could never ever possibly see the whole thing in one look You simply HAVE to move the scope across several eyepiece fields to see the whole thing. It looked like a giant strand of cotton candy being strethced and pulled apart across a vast expanse of black black sky.
We saw NGC galaxies that were as bright as Christmas lights.
M51 (The Whirlpool Galaxy) had great big huge enormous spirals in it. |
With my 8" reflector, even with our dark sky, many deep sky objects are "detectable". With 16' of aperture, these things will be IN YOUR FACE!!! The phrase: "ok guys, I found us the Spiral Galaxy M51!... you'll see it as a dim white puff in the center of your view..." will now be replaced by "sorry guys, I'm temporarily blinded because my retinas have been seared by the light of a billion suns!"
Here's a picture of the Veil Nebula.

Any Moonless (or mostly moonless) weekend (that's 3 weekends per month) (or weeknight) without clouds and the freedom to sleep late the following day! So... participants need to be either willing to act on very short notice (weather...) or try many times with only partial success (there WILL be food...) _________________ My pants don't smell like sunshine anymore. |

Cool deal man, might have to come back down and see it.
Oh, did it come with a cool lense case that makes that "POP" that makes Turtle feel all funny in the pants?
Oh I must say, that's some awesome photoshopping KT, especially with only 1 thumb |
