He was firing it up in the driveway as prospective buyers looked at the house next door.

I think that house will be vacant a little longer...

big grin

I think I'll be okay. The idea is that there are so many tress fallen in the nearby forest that I occasionally drive out there, chop one up into sections, and then bring it back here where I'll whack at those sections with the 8 pound maul Psychicmidget got us as a (LITERALLY) house warming gift. If I do this a few times this summer I should easily have a cord or so come winter. Plus, for some reason, I seem to enjoy the work. It keeps me in shape, and it's not pointless like running on a treadmill or pumping iron.

Just make sure you never, never cut a log that's laying on the ground. prop it up a bit with a smaller piece underneath. NOTHING dulls a chain more than hitting dirt.

I won't give you a safety lecture, but after using chainsaws for countless years....the one piece of equipment I will press is a nice pair of safety glasses. Cool ones that look like expensive shades.

Keeps the chips out of your eyes AND you look good too.

Oh..and a pair of decent gloves. A vibrating chainsaw will give you blisters faster than you can imagine.

I wonder why the dirt thing... There's a HUGE warning in the owners manual, plus everybody keeps telling me this! What is it about soft gentle dirt that dulls a chain faster than hard old logs???

I demand Mythbusters explain this!!!

grit. sorta like taking a sheet of coarse grit sandpaper (that never wears out) to your chain teeth really really fast... you get a days worth of sanding in about, ah, 2 seconds.

If there's dirt on the log...same thing. You have to wash the log first.

I bought an el-cheapo from the home despot. I'm regretting it now. My dad had a chainsaw that lasted 22 years - this one lasted two months.

That husky will last forever.
