Ok, I don't feel so bad now. I was picturing my lifting/carrying technique for those larger stumps, and they rest on/bounce off of my thighs. I was surprised by the bruises though since it never hurt. This would also explain why Dave has no bruises, since he spent most of the day pointing and grunting.
